For the times I get headaches and migraines I often use Preventa Patches to soothe my pain. But I was out of them the one day I had a mild migraine, and there was little to no chance I was making the trip to the store to get more.
I happened to have some essential oils on hand, and I have heard about how certain oils can have benefits to migraine and headache sufferers… I have been experimented on myself using lavender oil and peppermint oil, these are my findings.
Lavender Oil: Intensified my migraine. I think I have a sensitivity to floral scents and when I used it, I was very sorry I did. I have heard great things about lavender calming the pain and soothing the sufferer, but unfortunately that was not the case for me.
Peppermint Oil: Thank the Lord I tried this! It is my new go to for headache and migraine pain! I really dislike using my stockpile of triptans on anything less than a pain scale of 7, so I often rely on OTC pain meds and meditative techniques to manage the pain and other symptoms. I used a few drops of the Peppermint Essential Oil and simply anointed the top of my forehead with it. Tip- try not to bring it close to your eyes, it stings! Within seconds my head was tingling and cold. The pleasant scent of Peppermint soothed my mind and refreshed my senses. Added bonus, I have used it with minor nausea as well and it is helpful too! Reapply as needed.
Everyone has different triggers and tips for managing their pain. Let me know if you have had any success using essential oils!
